Love Coloured Soul
がリリースされましたので、最近の Ken Navarro
の活動状況などについて、メールによるインタビューをお願いしました．
筆者は、カリフォルニア(LA他)は頻繁に行っていますので、彼がLA在住なら
直接会ってインタビューしますが、彼の住んでいる場所はこちらの飛行ルート
の関係で訪問しにくいので、また機会を改めて、彼を訪問したいと思います．
ということで、今回はメールインタビューです．

Q1. It seems, your new CD "Love Coloured Soul" all songs are
very beautiful acoustic guitar sound featured. Why you have used
electric acoustic guitar only on this album. (F hole, is not used.)
新作ＣＤ"Love Coloured Soul"の全ての曲はとても美しいアコースティックギター
（エレアコ）サウンドがフィーチャされているようです．
今回、エレクトリックアコースティック
ギターだけをこのアルバムで使用した理由をお聞かせ下さい．
（Ｆホール は、使わずに．．）
A1. The acoustic guitar felt like the right "voice" for each of the
songs on "Love Coloured Soul" and so I stayed with that guitar sound
for the entire CD. I think it also gives "Love Coloured Soul" a
beautiful consistency in sound which is very appealing to me.
アコースティックギターの音色が "Love Coloured Soul"に収録した曲によく合う
「人の歌声」のような感じがしたので、このＣＤの曲全てにそのギターを使った
のです．たぶんそれは、私がそのサウンドをとても魅力的だと思ったので、
"Love Coloured Soul"全体に一貫性のある美しさをもたらしたのでしょう．
Q2. Last time when we have met, you said, you have Takamine acoustic
guitar for studio recording and Rick Turner electric acoustic guitar
for live performance. According to your CD information, Rick Turner
is used for studio recording for this album.
Is Rick Turner "guitar line out" recording available for this time ?
(No need microphone and recording room.)
この前お会いした時お聞きしたことで、スタジオ録音では高峰のアコースティック
ギターを使用し、ライブの時は Rick Turner のエレアコを使っている
とのことでした．今回のＣＤのノートを見ると、Rick Turner をスタジオ録音に
使用したように書かれていました．
今回、Rick Turner を使ったのは、ギターのラインアウトから録音できるからですか？
（マイクと録音ブースは必要ないですよね）
A2. Actually, I did not use the Rick Turner electric acoustic guitar
for much of this new CD. I used one of my Takamine acoustic nylon
string guitars for almost all of "Love Coloured Soul". I actually have
two Takamine acoustic guitars - one that I purchased in 1999 and the
other in 1982. I used my Takamine from 1982. I just love the natural
sound of that guitar in the studio!
実際は、Rick Turner のエレアコは、このＣＤではそれほどたくさんは
使いませんでした．"Love Coloured Soul"のすべての曲では、私が持っている
ナイロン弦の「高峰ギター」のうちの１つを使いました．
私は、２つ 高峰のアコースティックギターを持ってます．
１つは、１９９９年、もう一つは１９８２年に買ったものです．

Q3. What recording/sequencing software do you use on your Mac ?
Mac でどのような 録音／シーケンスのソフトウェアを使っていますか？
A3. I use "Digital Performer" and "Reason" for the Mac.
「デジタル・パーフォーマー」と「リーズン」を Macで使ってます．
Q4. Is there any business reason you have started CD/DVD direct sales
and download sales from your site, terminating Shanachie sales channel ?
これまでの、Shanachie の販売ルートを中止して、そちらのサイトから直接
CD/DVDの販売とダウンロード販売を始められましたが、何かビジネス上での
理由のためですか？
A4. I am no longer recording for Shanachie, "Love Coloured Soul" is
my first CD back on my own label, Positive Music Records. Though we
are distributed in many retail stores throughout the US via a national
distributor, I also sell the "Love Coloured Soul" and special DVD
packages from the online store at www.kennavarro.com. I think it is a
great way to give visitors to my website the opportunity to buy special
items and packages which they can not buy any other way. Also, since
"Love Coloured Soul" is not currently being distributed in Japan (I
wish that it was!), my online store is a great way for Japanese jazz
lovers to purchase a signed "Love Coloured Soul" CD and/or DVD package
directly from me.
もう、Shanachie のためのレコーディングはしていません．
"Love Coloured Soul"は、私自身のレーベル Positive Music Records に
戻っての最初のＣＤです．Positive のものは、アメリカ国内のディストリビュータ
を通じてアメリカ国内の多くの小売店で販売され、"Love Coloured Soul"と
スペシャルＤＶＤは、www.kennavarro.com のサイトから直販しています．
たぶん、サイトに来てくれた人には、他で扱っていない特別の製品を販売している
ということで、とても良い方法と思っています．
今のところ、"Love Coloured Soul"は日本で直接ディストリビュートされてい
ません（販売はされてほしいと思っていますが）が、私のオンラインストア

Q5. According to your "Calendar" on your site, sometimes you are travelling
for your live performance tour, but it seems not so many times.
How many days are you working (compsing / arranging /recording )
at your home studio a year?
あなたのサイトの"Calendar" を見ると、時々ライブツアーをされているようですが、
それほどたくさんでもないようです．年間で、何日ぐらい、自宅のスタジオで
（作曲／編曲／録音）などの仕事をされていますか？
A5. The Calendar on my website is constantly having new dates added to
it. The new year is young and so there are only 5-6 dates listed so
far. We expect to have 40 to 50 dates listed eventually. I spend
approximately 3-4 months a year working in my studio on a new album for
myself, and usually 1-2 months working on producing CDs for other jazz
artists. I like to work about half of the time in the recording studio
and the other half performing "live".
私のサイトの"Calendar"は、常時更新されていて、新しいスケジュールの日付
が掲載されていいきます．年の始めは５つか６つのスケジュールしか
出てないのです．たぶん４０から５０ぐらいになるはずです．
年間の内、３−４ケ月は自分の新しいＣＤのために自宅スタジオで仕事をしていて、
１−２ケ月は他のジャズミュージシャンのＣＤプロデュースです．
半分がスタジオ録音で、残りの半分がライブというのが良いですね．
Q6. Last time you said, your band members are living differenct cities.
How often do they get together for recording session at your home
studio ?
前回、あなたのバンドメンバーは他の町に住んでいるとお聞きしてます．
あなたのスタジオに、どの程度頻繁にレコーディングセッションなどで
集まってますか？
A6. My current band members all live in the Washington D.C area now
which is where I am from. We are able to record and rehearse much more
regularly now that we all live in the same area. We record when I am
creating a new CD and we rehearse new music, usually just before a new
tour.
現在、バンドメンバー全員、私の出身地と同じで、
Washington D.C あたりに住んでます．同じ地域にいるので、いつでも リハーサルや
レコーディングが可能です．普通は、新しいＣＤをリリースする時に録音し、
新しいライブツアーの前にリハーサルをしています．
Q7. Are you exchanging sequencing software each track data with
your band members if someone recorded separatly ?
もし、あなたのバンドメンバーが別テイクで録音する場合、シーケンスソフト
の録音トラックデータを他のバンドメンバとデータ交換などされてますか？
A7. I usually do not exchange sequencing data with band members and I
prefer to have them come to my studio in person to record. I do
exchange data this way with other composers whom I write music with.
普段、バンドメンバとトラックデータの交換はしてませんね、私は
録音してもらう人に、私のスタジオへ来てもらって録音してます．
データ交換をするのは、他の作曲家と曲作りをしている時です．
Q8. If yes, are you exchanging track data using Internet ?
もしそうなら、インターネット経由でデータ交換されてますか？
A8. Yes, by email. I use compression software such as MP3 etc.
(by E-mail or ftp )
はい．メールで． MP3 などに圧縮しています．
Q9. Do you have any composing/arranging request from other
musicians/singers not for your own original CD songs ?
あなたの自身のＣＤのためではない、他のミュージシャンや歌手のための
作曲／編曲のリクエストがありますか？
A9. Yes, I do. I try to write music for other artists' whose CDs I am
producing.
はい．もちろんです．もし誰か他のアーティストのＣＤをプロデュースする

Q10. Are you still interested in composing your original songs for
some other vocalist ?
(You said, "Smooth Sensation" was composed as somthing like vocal number)

（確か、"Smooth Sensation"は、ボーカル曲のようなつもりで作曲されたとお聞き

A10. No, not too much. But then again, it would depend on what the
vocalist wanted and if I thought it would be a good "fit" musically.

Q11. You said, you are also good at singing. Do you have any plans
(or wishes) featuring your vocal songs on your future CD ?

A11. No! I was a vocal major when I attended music college 31 years
ago but my guitar playing is now so much better than my singing that I
would feel uncomfortable attempting to create a vocal CD that I felt
was as good as my other CDs.
それは無いです． ３１年前、音楽学校の時「声楽」"vocal major"を専攻
してましたが、私のギター演奏は、歌を歌うよりずっと良くなっているので、
他で、歌物ＣＤを作るということはあまりやりたくないです．
Q12. In 2003, you were playing at Brazilian American Jazz festival.
Do you have any family members comming from Brazil or
born and raised in Brazil ?

されましたね．ご家族でブラジルのご出身、あるいはブラジル生まれで
アメリカに来られた方はいますか？
A12. Unfortuantly, that concert in Brazil was cancelled. I would have
loved to have done that concert in Brazil though and I hope the
opportunity comes again., I do not have any relatives in Brazil or
from Brazil.
あいにく、あのブラジルのコンサートはキャンセルされたんです．
私は、ブラジルでぜひ演奏したいと思っていたのに残念で、またの機会を
楽しみにしています．
ブラジル在住もしくはブラジルからアメリカへ来ている親戚などはありません．
Q13. Usually if someone is in music business, they need to live in
big cities like NewYork or LosAngeles. You were living
LosAngeles as session guitar player, but you have moved to
your hometown and starting your own label Positive Music Records
for your own CDs.
Do you still feel happy for this business and is there any
difficulties/inconvenience living in LA or NY ?
一般的に、音楽ビジネスに関わっている人の場合、ニューヨークやロサンゼルス
のような大都市に住む必要があります．あなたはロサンゼルスに以前
セッションギタープレーヤとして住んでいて、ご実家のある現在の住所へ
戻られ、ご自身のレーベル Positive Music Records を始められました．

また、ロサンゼルスやニューヨークに住むことに何か問題や不自由
がありましたか？
A13. I do not miss LA or NY very much. After living in LA for most
of the 1980's, I can say that I am glad I lived and worked there but I
am even happier that I moved away! Technology and airline travel have
made it relatively easy to sustain a successful music career outside of
LA and NY. I am very happy also to be raising my children in a more
friendly, natural setting.
私は、ロサンゼルスやニューヨークのことは忘れていません．ロサンゼルス
を離れた１９８０年代、ＬＡに住んで仕事をしていたことは良かったと
思っていましたが、そこから離れるともっと幸せになれる、と思いました．
テクノロジーと飛行機の利便さは、ロサンゼルスやニューヨーク以外の場所
に住んでいても、比較的簡単に自分の音楽ビジネス成功へと導いてくれます．
それ以外にも、家族（子供）と一緒に過ごせて、子供の成長をいつも見ていられる
という幸せもあります．
Q14. Do you have Radio station (or Radio network) they can
air play your CDs ?
あなたのＣＤの曲をかけてくれるラジオ局（ラジオネットワーク）はありますか？
A14. There are over 100 radio stations that play my music here in the
United States. There are also many satellite and cable broadcasters
who also play my music extensively., In addition, there a many web
casters such as Smoothjazz.com that play my music a great deal. The
web radio stations are great because they make it possible for people
anywhere in the world with an computer and an internet connection to
hear my music day or night, sometimes for the first time.
現在、アメリカ国内で１００以上のラジオ局で私のＣＤをかけてもらっています．
それ以外に、衛星放送やケーブル放送でも扱ってもらっています．
また、インターネット放送の Smoothjazz.com などでも流してもらっています．
ネットラジオはとても良いですね、世界中の人がネット接続とパソコンさえ
用意すれは、私の音楽を昼夜を問わず、あるいは全くの新譜を他に先駆けて
聴ける環境を用意してくれているのですから．
Q15. Are you happy spending with your family in your hometown
at a same time doing your own music business ?
ご実家に住みながら音楽ビジネスを行い、家族と一緒に過ごせるのは幸せですか？
A15. Yes, very much so. My family is the most important thing to me
in my life and they are also my main source of musical inspiration. I
love watching my children develop and grow!
もちろんです．私の家族は私にとってかけがえのないもので、私の音楽への
インスピレーションを与えてくれるものでもあります．
子供が育つのをいつも見ていられるのは嬉しいです．
Q16. Do you want to play in Japan for some live performance ?
Becasue your favorite guitar "Takamine" company is located very
close to Yoshi's hometown.
日本で来日コンサートなどやりたくないですか？
なぜなら、あなたの好きな「高峰ギター」の会社は、私（筆者）の住んでいる
ところからとても近いのです．
A16. I would LOVE to perform in Japan. I have never had the
opportunity to do so and very much hope to in the future. If I do tour
in Japan, I would ask Yoshi to take me to the factory and offices of my
favorite guitar company "Takamine".
もちろん、日本に行ってライブをやってみたいですよ．
まだ、日本でのライブはやったことはありません．もし私が来日ライブツアー
に行くのなら、酒井さん、ぜひ高峰ギターの工場と会社まで私を案内して下さい．
